THE ROYAL KNOBS
San Francisco’s electro-acoustic quartet The Royal Knobs are a group discontent to simply churn out the pre-fabricated structures typical of the so-called experimental electronic music scene. Rather, the combined efforts of Janus Kober, Todd Kurnat, Alan Stewart and Steve Taormina form to create a more livable sonic space, one built of equal parts rhythmic function and melodic form.
The Royal Knobs unique architecture is the result of a contributive process. An idea is formed and then handed off, additions, subtractions and modifications are made, and then the file is handed off again. The resulting songs are an amalgamation of everyone’s stylistic ideals: solid musical foundations of carefully mixed hip-hop and measured dub, effortlessly supporting a meandering lattice of organic melodies, unpredictable textural colorations, and un-quantized percussive ornamentations.
